Presenter: Good day and a warm welcome to all our listeners. It is time for another exciting episode of Khetha, brought to you by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in partnership with SABC Education. Today we will be talking about CATHSSETA - one of the 21 Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA’s). SETA’s fall under the Department of Higher Education and Training and their mandate is to facilitate skills development.
This month is the Tourism month therefore we have decided to share information about the SETA that focuses on Travel and Tourism, which is CATHSSETA. You will recall that earlier this year, our State President - the Honourable Cyril Ramaphosa - highlighted the importance of Tourism and its potential for growth. This he said during his inaugural State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2018 address in February.
Mr President believes that tourism can provide the country with “incredible opportunities” as the sector currently sustains 700 000 direct jobs and is performing better than most growth sectors. He further said that government will enhance support for destination marketing in key tourism markets and take measures to reduce regulatory barriers and develop emerging tourism businesses.
To help us unpack this topic today, we are joined by XXXXX from CATHSSETA. Welcome, it’s good to have you on the show.
Guest: Thank you for having me on the show.
Presenter: Can you tell us what exactly CATHSSETA is?
Guest: CATHSSETA is the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority. Our mandate as CATHSSETA is to facilitate skills development within our diverse sector. This we do through the disbursing of funds for skills programmes such as Bursaries, Learnerships, Internships and Work Integrated Learning.
We serve the interests of the following diverse and unique subsectors:
Presenter: What is your success as the SETA based on?
Guest: CATHSSETA’s critical success factors are described as the key processes that deliver services to the CATHSSETA beneficiaries, i.e. learners, employers and training providers. The process is based on the three critical components of the CATHSSETA service delivery Value Chain:
Presenter: That’s interesting, can you tell us how the CATHSSETA bursaries, internships and WIL can be accessed?
Guest: Our CATHSSETA Bursaries, Learnerships, Internships, Work Integrated Learning and Skills Programmes are disbursed through the Discretionary Grants Funding window. The opening of this window is advertised on the CATHSSETA website and on national newspapers between October and November each year.
To make this simple – this is how it goes…..an employer or a university applies for funding – the application is done online via our website www.cathsseta.org.za. CATHSSETA assesses the applications and the qualifying employers/organisations would then be granted the funding (lump sum) which they then use to pay out bursaries or use as a stipend for Internship/Learnerships.
Discretionary Grants are allocated at the sole discretion of CATHSSETA depending on the availability of funds, adherence to specific criteria as per the (CATHSSETA Discretionary Grant Policy and Guidelines which can be accessed on our website), as well as approval from the CATHSSETA Accounting Authority.
Presenter: Wow, this is mouthful. You spoke about this month being the Tourism month - can you please share with our listeners the various careers that exist in the Tourism and Hospitality sectors?
Guest: The tourism industry is very colourful for an example, try to think back to the last holiday you had or a work conference or workshop you had, what were the highlights that you remember?
Some of the exciting careers that exist in the Tourism and Hospitality sector are:
1) TRAVEL AGENT
Travel Agents research, plan, and book trips for individuals and groups. They ease the process of planning a trip. They are able to help with flight bookings, hotel selection, transfer arrangements, and holiday activities.
For this line of work, you have to have great organising skills and pay attention to detail.
2) HOTEL MANAGER
Hotel Managers oversee all aspects of running a hotel – from housekeeping and general maintenance to budget management and marketing of the hotel. If you’re considering a career as a Hotel Manager, you will need excellent interpersonal skills, experience in the hospitality industry, and a number of years’ experience in managing employees.
3) SPA MANAGER
Spa Managers are responsible for the day-to-day running of health and/or beauty spas. They manage a spa’s finances, employees, and services. Many of the tasks are business-related and can include recordkeeping, getting involved in promotional campaigns, maintaining stock inventories, and payroll management.
4) TOUR OPERATOR
A Tour Operator typically combines tour and travel components to create holiday packages. He or she will deal with various service providers, including bus operators, airlines and hoteliers.
Tour Operators mainly deal with Travel Agents, while Travel Agents deal with the public. Tour Operators will often visit destinations to check whether they should include them in their packages. If you enjoy travelling, this might be the job for you.
5) EVENT & CONFERENCE ORGANISER
Organising any event or conference is time consuming, so an Event and Conference Organiser will help with the finer details of planning an event. The role is hands-on and often involves working as part of a bigger team. Event and Conference Organisers coordinate every detail of meetings and conferences, from the speakers and meeting locations to the printed materials and audio-visual equipment.
6) TOUR GUIDE
Tour Guides work in the travel industry, and give guided tours to groups of visitors/tourists. Tour Guides must have expert knowledge of specific areas, including natural features, historic sites, museums, and other tourist destinations. Guides may give walking tours, bus tours, or even boat tours.
7) EXECUTIVE CHEF
The Executive Chef is in charge of a restaurant’s kitchen, and is responsible for managing the kitchen staff, planning the menu, sourcing the freshest ingredients and making sure that food hygiene is maintained throughout the restaurant. An Executive Chef must be able to spot problems and resolve them quickly and efficiently.
In short, a Wine Sommelier is an expert in wines. A Wine Sommelier is passionate about wine. He or she is a highly trained and knowledgeable wine professional, specialising in all aspects of wine service. Five-star restaurants will often employ a Sommelier to develop their wine list and to help customers find a wine within their budget that suits their tastes and complements their food. So fancy, I must say.
9) LEISURE ACTIVITY CO-ORDINATOR
Leisure Activity Co-ordinators usually work for resorts and hotel chains. They’re the people on the ground who make sure that any planned activities run smoothly. They’re also responsible for every aspect of the day-to-day management of a leisure centre, organising health and fitness programmes, promoting and marketing the business, and interacting with guests.
To become a Leisure Activity Co-ordinator, you will need excellent interpersonal skills, as you will spend most of your time interacting with guests.
Presenter: Types of personality required for tourism/cultural industries
Guest: Must interpersonal skills, outgoing personality, people’s person, attention to detail, punctual, must be hands on, problem solving personality, creative, resilient
Presenter: What subjects should a learner have to be considered for one of the careers you have mentioned?
Guest: Admission requirements differ from one institution to the other but the basic subjects that one should have are Tourism studies, Consumer studies, hospitality and a general interest in the sector.
Presenter: Where can one obtain the qualifications for the careers you mentioned?
Guest: At TVET colleges, universities of technology and universities.
Presenter: Speak about collaborations with DoT and DoAC
Guest: CATHSSETA partnered with the Department of Tourism to host an annual event called the National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE) – a partnership that was formed since 2008. The aim of the NTCE is to expose learners, university students and youth in career opportunities that exist within the Tourism and Hospitality sectors.
This expo is interactive and affords learners first-hand experience to platforms such as the SAA simulator, hotel experience, chefs corner and many more. We also have educator forums for the teachers to expose them to the new trends in the sector.
The three-day national expo is targeted at learners from Grade 9 – 12. Through this platforms the learners also get to experience how it feels to sleep in a hotel. This is more so for the rural learners who in most cases experience this for the very first time.
This year’s NTCE will be held in Sun City from 28 – 30 September.
