Gearing for a sparkling SABC

On Friday, the 8th of June 2018, the SABC Group COO Mr Chris Maroleng hosted a rediffusion meant to celebrate his 100-day mark at the SABC and launched two projects meant to take SABC to new heights. The event took place at the M1 Studios in Auckland Park with the rest of the provinces partaking in their respective venues.

First Citizens were welcomed by the Acting Group CEO Ms Nomsa Philiso who applauded staff for participating in the organisational culture survey last year and urged everyone to continue supporting the programme. “I appeal that we support the COO on this project and embrace the change that we are going to be embarking on, through this culture revitalisation project” she said.

After taking the stage, Mr Maroleng reminded staff about the plans that drove the revitalisation of the SABC revolving around financial sustainability, governance, operating model as well as people and culture. Reflecting back to the key touch points discovered on the employee survey, the COO outlined low morale by the

SABC employees and lack of confidence in the organisational leadership, which encouraged the introduction of a culture revitalisation project called ‘SPARKLE’. “This is a transversal transformation project meant to initiate change and transformation across all SABC divisions” he stated.

Through SPARKLE, the SABC is on a journey to revive its reputation, financial viability and a culture that encourages effectiveness; by driving Seamless customer experience, Peak commercial performance, Amazed audiences through inspiring content, Reviving hearts and minds of staff, having Key focus on digital media and data, Leading in enabling technology and lastly, Exciting the public through excellence and efficiency.

In his last words, Mr Maroleng encouraged the staff to travel the journey of restoring the SABC with him. “We need to get to a place where we understand that the destiny of this organisation lies in our hands” he concluded.

The SPARKLE qualities were already reflecting when the SABC confirmed its readiness to host the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 and announced the anticipated return of a veteran Sport Presenter Mr Robert Marawa, who will be hosting a simultaneous broadcast show on both Radio 2000 and Metro FM weekdays in the evening. The first ever simulcast indicates how SABC is progressing in ensuring excellent service to the public of South Africans, African continent and beyond.
