All they have in common is the fact that they have not realised their full potential. It’s for Life, an educational reality series is broadcast on Wednesdays at 11h00.
Over 39 weeks, It’s for Life challenges young adults to define themselves in the diverse, opportunity-filled landscape of South Africa. Through a new appreciation of who they are, they are holistically empowered to manifest their personal potential.
It’s for Life selects participants from broad communities across the country to produce a programme that filled with South African linguistic wealth. Every 13th episode is a celebration and retrospective look at what three participants have learned; they are congratulated at a gala ceremony attended by everyone who contributed to the show. It’s for life is produced by LCAT for SABC Education.
Over the years It’s for Life has advanced the career possibilities of a number of young people while providing viewers with lots of entertainment. The show has taken viewers to exciting places in our country showcasing our national cultural diversity.
Young viewers watching the show will be inspired by well known actor and very strict task master Seputla Sebogodi who mentors and leads the participants into achieving their goals. Seputla is probably most known for his role as the villain Kenneth Mashaba in Generations. Now, viewers will see him in a total new role as presenter, task master and mentor in SABC Education’s reality show, It’s for Life. The reasons why Seputla was chosen are many. First he is an accomplished actor both on stage and television with an outstanding following. His authoritive demeanour commands respect which is exactly what the production wanted. Seputla’s humble beginnings, his dedication to uplift and empower others and his community involvement is right in line with It’s for Life’s requirements. Seputla gives 100 % of himself for the show.
Episode 1 – Profiles and Journey – 1 August 2012
In this episode we get to know the three participants, Tsakani Mahlangu, Chriss Lodi and Yvonne Mahlangu. We visit them at home and talk to their family members. Seputla Sebogodi introduces himself and gives them their first task; they must race to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
Episode 2 – Community Project Alexandra – 8 August 2012
We start in Alexandra where Seputla tells the participants a bit about corporate social responsibility and the importance of lending a hand in the community. He tells them that sitting around waiting for a job is not something they should be doing. Getting out and helping in the community not only makes you feel great but can lead to wonderful opportunities. Participants need to go out into the community, find a need and then do something to help relieve the need. This needs to be sustainable.
Episode 3 – Polokwane – 15 August 2012
Seputla arrives at the hotel and tells the participants to pack because he is taking them out of Jozi. We see them travel and then the sun sets. The next day they visit tourist attractions in Polokwane; museums, Peter Mokaba Stadium, horse riding, snake parks and walk with lions. They must ask questions; gather information about the places from visitors and employees. They must look at ways to enhance or develop these establishments as tourist attractions. The next morning they have to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges who are representatives from Polokwane Tourism and Municipality. This teaches participants how to gather information, analyze and present it; they get to think out of the box and how to handle pressure and present themselves.
Episode 4 – Cultural – 22 August 2012
The participants visit Modjadjikloof and the Royal Kraal in this cultural and colourful episode. They learn the traditional dance, beading and see elderly women perform a cleansing ceremony. Chriss cooks for some of the villagers in the traditional way. They visit the wonderful cycad forest and learn more about the conservation of it.
Episode 5 – Career Planning – 29 August 2012
SAGDA assist in a day of taking the participants through career planning. This includes a group session of career management consultation, coaching and CV evaluation with Zhingaphi Ngewu (career management consultant) and Juliet Chokoe (database coordinator). Then they get an individual career assessment session with Khosi Jiyane (resident psychologist).
Episode 6 – Entrepreneurial – 5 September 2012-08-01
Participants meet Seputla outside their hotel where he tells them they are going back to their hometowns; Chriss to Mamelodi, Tsakani to Hammanskraal and Yvonne to Diepkloof. They each receive R500 which they can use to generate more money. The one with the most money at the end of the day wins a prize. They can use the money any way they see fit to do this; but they only have a few hours.
Episode 7 – Adventure – 12 September 2012
Participants get out and about as they learn about the importance of balance. They start off at Jozi X, an adventure park in Bryanston where they do all kinds of activities to get the adrenaline going. From there they go to Orlando Towers in Soweto for free fall and bungee jumping. These are activities they have never done before. For a day they go out, have fun and face their fears.
Episode 8 – Day on the Job – 19 September 2012
Each participant spends time with companies or people in the career that they are interested in; Chriss in media studies and radio DJ, Tsakani in quantity surveying and Yvonne in labour relations management.
Episode 9 – South African Graduates Development Association (SAGDA) – 26 September
Participants meet the CEO and colleagues of SAGDA who brief them on an advert they must create for SAGDA. After the briefing they have a little more than a day to conceptualise, plan and shoot the advert. At the end of the episode we see their final product.
Episode 10 – Treasure Hunt – 3 October 2012
To know where you are going, you need to know where you are from. The participants learn more about the birth of the earth, DNA, evolution, the formation of fossils and the cradle of humankind by finishing a treasure hunt at Maropeng. They only have two hours to finish and if they succeed a picnic and cash prize awaits them.
Episode 11 – Organise a Graduate Empowerment Seminar – 10 October 2012
Participants must organize a Graduate Empowerment Seminar with SAGDA and The Rosebank College for students and unemployed graduates. The seminar will be held at Rosebank College in Braamfontein. There will be a SETA exhibition, 200 guests as well as guest speakers. The participants need to help organise the seminar and deliver a speech.
Episode 12 – Introspection – 17 October 2012
The participants look back at their lives and think about what is keeping them back in life. What do they need to work on and how can they do it?
Episode 13 – Gala – 24 October 2012
This last episode is a reflection of the previous 12. The presenter interviews the participants about their journey on It’s for life. They share their stories of what they learned, how they have changed and what is the way forward. We see the participants at the Gala event where they each receive an internship from SAGDA to kick start their careers.
