Elderly people in rural areas face hardship and tough challenges. Their plight is exacerbated by food insecurity, health issues, unemployment and being marginalised within communities.
This is not the case in Mamaila village in Limpopo, where a group of elderly community members are actively engaged in vegetable production under the Nahakwe Community Project. We meet these elderly co-op members and can’t help being impressed with their work ethic and zest for life. We also visit 70 year old Steve Mohale, who successfully runs a 300 hectare vegetable farm near Mamokgadi village in Limpopo province. He specialises in high quality tomatoes, which he sells at leading fresh produce markets. Steve and many other elderly farmers are living proof that age is no barrier to success in agriculture.
