“When I was about 11 I started dreaming like any other child. Dreams of success and possessions; own house, own money, car you name them. When I looked at the situation around me and societal norms, I didn’t see much hope. Born and raised in a small poor village far from modernity the accepted status quos was ‘finish school and get married’. I realized that my dream did not match and no matter how I wanted to adapt to traditional norms the dream could not leave me. Through books and TV I realized that my dreams were possible, but there was something that bothered me about attaining my dream. I was not considered smart or intelligent at school, I was just doing the bare minimum. Close to the end of high school I noticed that most of the intelligent students whom teachers had much hope in did not make it to the end of high school. Some dropped out, got married or fell pregnant.”
"I became more curious asking myself questions; why do people from devastating and deprived backgrounds becoming inspirational and turn their lives around like those I read about in books? Why do people from privileged backgrounds with all resources end up frustrated and often chemically imbalanced? Why are some people heroes and others warning signs? I began searching for the answers and applying them in to my own life.”
“I discovered that the key to success is not your intelligence or how smart you are, it is the ability to work hard and long enough that will get you to your destiny. It is passion and hunger to succeed, to persevere, being constant in what you are doing day in and out; realizing that life is a marathon not a sprinter. When I was doing piece jobs as a domestic worker I would imagine that the house and the cars belonging to my employer belonged to me. That kept me motivated to work towards something possible and also made it easier for me to do my job to the best of my ability, which resulted in me getting a bursary to further my studies. I have learned that the ability to learn is not fixed, it can change with your effort, and failures are not permanent but a process of life like any other element. The ability to do well in life is based on your ability to develop a no excuse mental muscle of perseverance and to build a solid work ethic. My ability to achieve my dreams did not take talent or intelligence but passion, perseverance and pressing on day in and out. That is the difference between achievers and non-achievers regardless of which foot your begin with.”
