16423047 1371760002886286 1156440611035523559 oAt the end of January 2017 iSpani hit the road in three provinces to share our insight into how to best find your way into the world of work in a career that suits you.  Eleven thousand learners and their teachers in nine schools across Gauteng, North West and Free State provinces spent a morning assembly with Career Coach Pula Matsaung and iSpani presenter Mac Leshomo, followed by 100 learners, from Grades 8 to 10, and 5 educators from each school really drilling down into new ways to find out how to choose the best career in a full day workshop on Day 2.

Through sharing their personal stories Mac and Pula engaged learners in a process of examining how they can make the best use of the education to achieve their full potential. Pula encourage learners to “Think BIG”, exploring the role of Books that inform, change and shape your life, Individuals you spend time with who provide support and inform your self-image, and how to set realistic and achievable Goals.  Mac focused in on learners’ Purpose, Plan and Performance, all of which add up to assist achieving your Potential, and how if you choose your future goals over your immediate comfort your chances of achieving them are so much higher.

On Day 2 the workshops focused on “Thinking Critically – Where Do I Plug into the Working World?”, allowing the iSpani Team to unpack the realities of the employment environment measured against the learner’s realities; setting out routes into career pathing and academic requirements at every level, from walk-in to post graduate qualifications. Mac brought along some easily identifiable characters, in a series of entertaining and hilarious skits, who presented the learners with everyday social and economic realities that may challenge them on their route to the career they feel they are best suited for.  This opened up lively debates on the options available to the learners anchored in real world conditions; including academic choices in the final 3 years of school; guiding their decisions to enter tertiary studies or skills training based on interest, ability, personal strengths, reasonable employment opportunity on graduation and financial requirements and options available to fund studies.

The main workshop exercise focussed on enabling critical thinking in identifying all opportunities available within the lifecycle of a product, empowering independent analysis of decent work opportunities in the local economy.  This “critical thinking” exercise was very well-received by the teachers, once each table had worked through the exercise guided by Pula, Mac and the iSpani team the result was powerful, with many learners and teachers finding answers to questions they had not thought to ask before.  Teachers at all schools felt so empowered they asked for permission to recreate the exercise in their schools, first with their colleagues and then in their classrooms.

The learners in all provinces came away from the sessions excited, empowered and enthusiastic.  iSpani will be bacl n the road in the future and if you are interested in your school hosting assemblies and workshops for learners and educators get in touch through this web page and we could be coming to you soon.
