bootcamp2019Skeem Saam Boot Camps 2019

For the 2019 Skeem Saam Boot Camps SABC Education visited  schools in the Western Cape, Northern Cape and North West Provinces.

The Boot Camps are an  opportunity to share with the schools the different shows within the SABC Education brand and to have an in depth discussion with the kids about the central premise of a show like Skeem Saam and other issues affecting young people.

We highlight some of our recent storylines and see if the learners are able to identify the underlying educational messages embedded in each one. This year we also used the opportunity to conduct a small scale survey with the learners to ascertain which of our storylines really resonated with them and which didn’t.

On day one the school usually gathers at the assembly area and the presence of the actors is kept a secret until they are called up onto the stage. The arrival of the actors is usually met with huge uproar and much excitement it sometimes becomes impossible to curb the excitement. But usually when our actors start talking to them in earnest about their lives, the struggles they dealt with and how they overcame challenges, you can sometimes hear a pin drop.

Day two is a closed session. This is where we meet with about 90 students from the 3 different schools, which have been selected by the teachers. Our aim is to try and have these sessions with students that the teachers feel could really benefit from having a more intimate engagement with our actors and the team from SABC Education.

The programme is structured around a central theme, be it alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancies, entrepreneurship etc. We also talk to the young people about the different options for further education other than universities that they could pursue. We end of the session with a question and answer session where they can feel free to ask questions and share their experiences. We then have an outdoor exercise session where everyone have to dig deep to get moving. Mind- Body-Soul stuff.  We end of the day with a hearty lunch and a Skeem Saam gift package for each learner before they depart.

We kicked off our tour in the Western Cape with a visit to IInginga Zethu SS School in Ceres. Then to Zwelethemba High and Vusisizwe Secondary Schools both in Worcester.  For our visit to the Western Cape we were accompanied by Nozi Langa who plays the character of Glenda, and Gift Mokhampanyane who plays Fanie.

The second province we visited was the Northern Cape where we paid a visit to Monwabisi Secondary and Orion Secondary Schools in De Aar. We then went about an hour and a half  further inland to a little town called Hanover where we paid a visit to Phakamisani High School. Joining us in this provincial visit was Phophi Modau who plays the character of Cindy and Thabang Lefoa who portrays the character, Sphola.  They too were met with huge fanfare, applause and screaming exuberance.

Our last leg of the journey was to the North West Province. Here we visited Boikagong Scondary, Meriti Secondary and President Mangope Technical and Commercial High School. Joining us on this leg of our journey was the ever popular Thabo Mkhabela who portrays the character of Leshole, and one of our new crop of young students on Skeem Saam, Koloi, played by Tshepo Senatle.

In total we met with an estimated 7000 learners from the various schools and had closed workshops sessions with a selection of 270 young people.

Watch Skeem Saam every weeknight at 18.30 only on SABC 1, Mzansi Fo.
