The education system in South Africa has seen many changes and faced many challenges over the past 10 years, leaving many feeling disappointed and disheartened with the current levels of education. Studies conducted show that about 2/3 of junior primary school children are illiterate and innumerate. This is a shocking statistic and begs the question; “Where are we going wrong?”

Though the state of South African's education is not the worst in Africa, as stated by former president Nelson Mandela “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Despite the report that South Africa has a high enrolment rate many of these children do not have access to meaningful education, whether due to lack of text books and infrastructure or qualified teachers there are thousands of children in primary school and even high school who are illiterate.
